Shadow Minister of Sport and Recreation, Donald Lee, and Shadow Minister of Women, Youth, Children and People with Disabilities, Helen Lamoela addressed the audience as did DA candidate in Ward 5 Desmond Pietersen.

Residents said that they will not be fooled by the sudden service delivery like the grading of their roads as they have seen too many election promises in the past.

“Ons bloed is blou (our blood is blue)” said one DA supporter after the meeting.

Helen Lamoela said that in the past 15 years, things have gone backwards in South Africa and the ANC is incapable of turning things around, to much applause from the audience.

“I have spent time with the DA Councillors in Kouga and they are a capable team”, said Lamoela. “They will be able to fix the Kouga”.

Minister backtracks on car purchases

Yesterday in Parliament the Minister of Women, Children and People with Disabilities, Lulu Xingwana, failed to take responsibility for the purchase of four luxury cars for her and her department between 2009 and 2012.

When questioned about her skewed priorities and spending, Minister Xingwana claimed that the cars in question were for her “security”, a “cost-cutting tactic” and that she has never purchased a car as a Minister.

However, last week a reply to a DA parliamentary question clearly revealed that the Minister and her deputy spent approximately R2.8 million on car purchases.

In 2009 the Minister spent R814 850.01 on a Range Rover and R985 599.00 on a Mercedes-Benz S350 in 2012. Deputy Minister Bogopane-Zulu spent R460 471.00 on a Chrysler 300C V6 in 2009 and R566 205.00 on another Chrysler 300C V6 in 2010.

The DA will investigate this matter in order to determine whether or not the Minister mislead the House, and will seek disciplinary action if found necessary.

The Minister’s claims are a feeble attempt to justify – if not distance herself – from yet another scandal, and simply won’t fly
