The Kouga Council will impose water restrictions when we meet on 15 December for the final Council meeting of the year.

With the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro giving Kouga four months to reduce water usage or face extremely punitive water tariffs for the next three years until the Nooigedacht Water Scheme starts to supply water, lets look at what restrictions will apply:

The following activities will be prohibited once water restrictions have been approved by Council:

* The use of hosepipes, sprinklers and drip systems
* The watering of gardens, lawns and grassed areas.
* The washing of paved areas, walls, roofs, buildings and similar structures, vehicles or other equipment
* The filling of swimming pools, paddling pools, fountains and ponds
* The connection of a hosepipe or any form of irrigation system to a tap supplying water from the municipal water supply system, except for fire-fighting purposes.

We will be introducing Part B water tariffs from 1 January 2017. This is not to try make money to pay the Metro water bill of R 46 million but an effort to reduce our water usage. By reducing water usage, residents will in effect be saving money, which is the entire purpose of the punitive tariff.

If we do not reduce water usage by 15 % by 31 March 2017, water bills will more than double as the cost of water received from the Metro will be subject to punitive tariffs from the Metro.
