ANC Chief Whip Stone Sizani resigned from his position because he was crushed by his conscience.

The African National Congress announced earlier on Wednesday that Sizani had resigned from Parliament with immediate effect.

DA Chief Whip John Steenhuisen said Sizani’s resignation was a clear indication of schisms within the ANC caucus.

“For the past three years Sizani has been forced to make a career of defending the indefensible in Parliament at President [Jacob] Zuma’s behest, and has sustained numerous embarrassments in the National Assembly in the process,” he said.

Steenhuisen said Sizani’s resignation was a clear sign of the growing rifts within the ANC, and “of an ANC Caucus which is collapsing under the weight of President Zuma’s maligned presidency”.

Moloto Mothapo, spokesperson for office of the ANC chief whip, said Sizani had been redeployed.

“The National Executive Committee of the ANC will make a decision regarding the replacement when it meets for its regular sitting in a few weeks’ time,” he said.

Sizani would be temporarily replaced by Deputy Chief Whip Doris Dlakude.

An ANC MP, who spoke off the record, said Sizani was heading to Germany, where he would be deployed as an ambassador.
