The Kouga region experienced a 38 % population increase between 2001 – 2011, according to official Census figures. A total of 98 588 people resided in Kouga according to the 2011 census.

This growth rate is substantially higher than the 4.5 % population increase in the Eastern Cape over the same time period.

The coloured population is the biggest race group in Kouga, making up 42.6 % of the population, with black Africans making up 38,8 %, according to the Kouga Municipality’s annual report.

The white population of Kouga is 17,6 % of the total population.

52 % of the population is under the age of 30 years, with around 15 % being over the age of 55 years. This means the Kouga is no longer a “retirement village” as was the case in previous decades.

Afrikaans is the most spoken language in Kouga,, with 58 % of the population speaking Afrikaans as their home language. isiXhosa is spoken by 30 %, while English is spoken by 6 % of the population.

30 000 people have economically active in the Kouga but a worrying 24 000 are not economically active.

With the majority of the Kouga’s population under the age of 30, it is clear that the economy of the Kouga needs to expand to create more jobs.
