In spite of the R200 million increase in the national Social Development budget in November 2013, only ANC supporters are provided with food parcels in Kouga.
This, while the truly destitute queue from 02h00 in the morning.
According to them, only the first twenty applicants are serviced by the SASSA office in Humansdorp.
However, despite meeting the criteria of being destitute and unemployed, people still aren’t receiving the assistance they need.
As a result, some beneficiaries return up to five times in the hope of finally receiving some help.
Although SASSA claims this is part of the poverty relief project, food parcels are blatantly dished out to ANC supporters, especially over weekends.
Even municipal bakkies are being used for this purpose, which is a clear indication that this is for political reasons and not poverty relief.
The very existence of the poverty relief project has created false hope for people in desperate need. Even the SASSA visits to outlying areas have the same results as again only twenty people are helped.
“Many of the applicants come from outlying areas such as Patensie, Hankey, Loerie, Jeffreys Bay and Oyster Bay, having to pay transport costs with money that they haven’t got, this means that unnecessary revisits prove to be extremely costly, said Elza Van Lingen from the Democratic Alliance.
“As the Democratic Alliance:
We called on Helen Lamoela, DA MP for Women, Children and People with Disabilities, to phone the SASSA area manager for the Kouga and Koukamma region to establish why there appears to be political favouritism in the allocation of food parcels and why only twenty applicants are processed per day.
If the responses are not satisfactory, we will contact the director general, Virginia Petersen, and demand answers. We will not hesitate to report these unfair and unlawful actions to the public protector.
The Democratic Alliance is a party for all the people, which means we will fight for all the people to benefit from government programs,” added Van Lingen.
