The much anticipated by-elections that took place in Kouga yesterday saw the DA retain Ward 5 in Humansdorp with the ANC retaining Ward 9 in Hankey.
This means the ANC still has a 15-14 majority in the Kouga Council and will continue to govern the Kouga Municipality.
The DA’s Desmond Petersen won 56 % of the vote in Humansdorp and defeated the Mayor of Kouga, Booi Koerat convincingly.
The ANC and the DA were the only two parties who contested the by-election that was held following the death of DA Councillor Eugene Groep.
The ANC won Hankey, also with 56 % of the vote, and thereby retained the Kouga Municipality.
Athol Trollip, the leader of the DA in the Eastern Cape said that Hankey was always going to be a difficult ward to win as it has been a traditionally strong ANC ward.
“I am heartened to see the DA grew its support from 33 % in 2011 to 44 % in Hankey yesterday. Our majority also increased in Humansdorp so we are well positioned to continue to grow in the Kouga and I am looking forward to 2016 when the next local government elections will take place”, said Trollip.
